Introduction to Energy Within and Around
Let’s start off by defining what energy means to us. In the energy healing space, we are familiar with this term because a specific type of energy is used to promote healing. However, if you are just starting out on your spiritual journey you may be unfamiliar with how energy interactions occur in our everyday lives. This article will describe the basic forms of energy interactions within us and our environment to explain how you can protect your energy from becoming depleted.
Energy is always present within us as well as all around us. As expressed by Albert Einstein, “everything is energy and that’s all there is to it.”
Energy Within
Our personal energy is our power source. A battery that we draw from every day. We all know the feeling when our energy feels good and fully charged. We feel motivated and inspired to move forward, like starting that project we’ve been putting off, going to the gym, or showing up as our best self at work.
When our energy is low, we feel stressed, anxious, and maybe even depressed. The energy demands of everyday life are exhausting and there is no energy reserve to use. We are running on a low battery.
Recharge
From a well-being point of view, this state is not optimal. Our goal is to continuously maintain our energy levels by finding clean energy sources to recharge our battery. Some examples include:
Going out in nature to ground ourselves and take in the pure earth energy source that naturally revitalizes our energy.
Meditating can be as simple as sitting or standing for 1-2 minutes. By taking a few slow deep breaths, we are able to allow our body and mind to be present, to recenter and to feel grounded and steady.
Being out in sunlight/daylight does wonders for our energy levels and typically elevates our mood.
Receiving Reiki energy connects us to the vital life force energy that serves to recharge our energy naturally.
Energy Around
Energy interactions occur when we are with other people as well as in physical locations around us. Let’s first look at our energy interactions with other people by giving a few examples.
Many of us may already be aware of this experience when someone comes up behind us quietly and we sense their presence. This is an energy interaction with another person. We can sense or feel them whether we are aware that we have this ability or not.
Another example of feeling or sensing someone’s energy is when we meet a person and begin to have a conversation. If the energy between the two people is flowing back and forth equally, it will feel pleasant. If the energy is flowing only in one direction, it will feel unpleasant for the person who is not receiving energy back. They may start to feel drained. This drained feeling is because the other person is drawing energy to them and away from us. We often describe this experience by saying “That person is so draining to talk to.”
Many people are struggling with low-energy stores and are acting irritably and aggressively because they don’t know how to restore their energy to a healthy level. To steal energy back for themselves, they personally attack others perhaps by being rude, inconsiderate, or hostile. Think back to school bullies: They put others down to elevate themselves energetically in an attempt to regain lost power and energy. Everything is an energetic interaction.
If interactions with other people and their energy is not familiar to you, then you may have experienced this next example; walking into a home or building and knowing right away that you do not want to be there or go in any further. You feel uncomfortable and ill at ease—you’re thinking this place has a “bad vibe”. This phenomenon is sensing the energy of a place. The location or structure has absorbed the energy of past and/or present inhabitants and depending on how those individuals lived their lives, it will feel welcoming or unwelcoming, good or bad.
Like it or not we interact with energy all the time therefore, we may want to be armed with knowledge about experiences that most of our parents and teachers do not discuss, like spirit and energy encounters.
The Key
To protect ourselves from these draining situations, we can step back and recognize what is really happening. Those that are energetically depleted, are attempting to regain energy by draining others. This is simply a power-stealing maneuver. By quickly identifying the underlying truth of the situation, we halt the process of energy stealing as we regain our control and don’t take it personally. Protecting our power source is vital to remain energetically viable. These energy-stealing individuals can find energy somewhere else.
Something to keep in mind is that the energy we put out to others will always come back to us: anger, frustration, kindness, or compassion. If someone is sending you low energy, try to take the higher road and share compassion.
It is not always possible to keep our energy levels at peak capacity and depletion may occur. Nature walks, meditation, or avoiding energy stealers are wonderful simple measures to consider. It may also be time to consider Reiki. It is a restorative energy that works with you to recharge your energy and return you to a healthy state allowing you to be the best possible version of yourself.
